MySISTA's Online

Welcome to MySISTAsOnline!!!! We have created a user friendly, culturally responsive website specifically designed to address the needs of African American breast and cervical cancer survivors in Alabama. Survivors are defined as someone who is living with, through, and beyond breast and cervical cancer. The definition includes family, friends and caregivers who are affected by the diagnosis in any way. Research efforts have shown that African American women who participate in support groups fair better than those who do not. Moreover, support groups are critically important to the functioning and emotional well-being of cancer survivors. Women who routinely participate in face-to-face cancer support groups have better survival rates when they attend weekly sessions with other cancer survivors. This is promising news because it suggests that the use of support groups as an evidenced based strategy to reduce disparities among breast and cervical cancer survivors is among our best and most promising practices to address survivorship issues. Therefore, we have created an online support group as an alternative or compliment to face-to-face support groups to address disparities. Please choose a county listed on the left of the page to find out more about support groups in your area and even view a support group meeting. We invite you to blog on discussion boards with other survivors and caregivers in your area. We are also promoting Health and Wellness and together we can SURVIVE!!!!
